Basic Facts about Tirana
Tirana is the capital city of Albania a country situated in the
North Eastern Mediterranean inhabited by one of the oldest ethnic
populations in Europe. Albania is a country in South-Eastern Europe,
in the West of the Balkan Peninsula, which borders in the North
with Kosova, North-East with Montenegro, on the East with the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and in the South and South-East
with the Republic of Greece. On the West, Albania is washed by the
Adriatic and Ionian seas. Although foreigners know it as Albania
the natives call it Shqiperi which from Albanian many translate
it as “Land of Eagles” possibly to its very mountainous
terrain, twice the European altitude average.
Although relatively modern, taking the shape of an urban centre
only e few centuries ago, Tirana has traces of ancient dwellings
in and around it, testimony to a much more ancient past. Today it
has turned into a Metropolitan City of nearly 800 000 inhabitants
and the most important business centre of the country. As a result
it is a place where people tent to converge for both business and
pleasure.
